Let’s meet another one of our wholesale customers, from the heart of the city where Lost Sheep Coffee started, Canterbury Bakery.
We had a chat with Eris about how it all started, how their customers enjoy their Lost Sheep Speciality Coffee and why you should pop in and visit them next time you're in the area.
1. Tell us your story – how did your journey begin?
Canterbury Bakery began in 2015 out of a deep love for good bread and proper pastries. Founded by Eris, the bakery first operated from the University of Kent, supplying freshly baked goods to local cafés, restaurants, and farm shops across the region.
Eris trained under renowned baker Paul Hollywood, learning the art of traditional bread and pastry making. That foundation shaped everything the bakery stands for today: simple, honest baking using quality ingredients. No preservatives—just local flour, water, salt, and yeast. And every pastry is made with real butter for that unmistakable richness.
In 2023, Canterbury Bakery moved to its current home at 3 Marlowe Arcade in the heart of Canterbury. Now everything is baked onsite—from crusty sourdoughs to buttery croissants and soft, fluffy focaccia (yes, even the sandwich bread is house-made).
From day one, our mission has stayed the same: to bake with care, craft, and integrity. Canterbury Bakery is where real bread lives.
2. What made you choose Lost Sheep Coffee as your coffee partner?
At Canterbury Bakery, we believe great pastries deserve great coffee. That’s why we partnered with Lost Sheep Coffee—a local Kent-based roaster known for their freshly roasted beans, smooth nutty flavour, and commitment to quality. From day one, they impressed us not only with their coffee, but with their friendly, responsive service.
What’s kept us with Lost Sheep over the years is the personal touch. They’re always just a phone call away, easy to reach whenever we need support. We speak directly with the founder, who regularly visits the bakery to check in, offer advice, and make sure everything’s running smoothly. Their help with our coffee machine and the free staff training they provide ensures we’re serving the best cup possible—every time.
Like us, they care about doing things properly. It’s a partnership that just works.
3. How do your customers most enjoy their Lost Sheep Coffee?
Our customers genuinely appreciate the quality of our coffee—and many can instantly recognise the distinctive taste and aroma of Lost Sheep. It’s smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced, making it a favourite whether served as a flat white, cappuccino, or a simple espresso. We often hear from regulars who love that we’ve chosen a local, premium coffee that stands out. For many, it’s not just a drink—it’s part of the full Canterbury Bakery experience.
4. Aside from serving great coffee, why should people come and visit you?
Aside from serving seriously good coffee, Canterbury Bakery is all about real, honest baking. Every loaf, pastry, and cake is made onsite—fresh each day—with proper ingredients and traditional methods. From our crusty sourdoughs to buttery croissants and handmade cakes, everything we serve is crafted with care and a genuine love for the art of baking.
Our focaccia is fluffy, our pastries are golden and flaky, and our shelves are always filled with something tempting. Whether you’re grabbing a loaf to take home, enjoying lunch with friends, or just popping in for a quiet moment with a coffee and an almond swirl, we aim to make every visit feel warm, welcoming, and deliciously worth it.
It’s not just a bakery—it’s a little slice of real Canterbury life.
5. Describe what customers can experience when they visit you?
When you step into Canterbury Bakery, you’re welcomed by the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread—often drifting through the Marlowe Arcade before you even reach the door. Inside, our open kitchen gives you a front-row seat to the baking in action. You might hear the gentle clatter of trays, the hum of mixing, or even the oven alarm ringing to signal another batch of bread ready to come out piping hot.
From crusty sourdoughs and fluffy focaccia to buttery croissants and seasonal cakes, everything is made fresh onsite, right before your eyes. Our space is warm and lively, filled with the smell of real baking and the sound of friendly conversation and steaming coffee.
Whether you’re popping in for your daily loaf, enjoying lunch made with bread straight from the oven, or just treating yourself to a pastry and a coffee, Canterbury Bakery offers more than just food—it’s a full sensory experience rooted in craft, care, and community.
