Kenya Karii AB
Cola, Currants, Papaya

Experience the delicious and unique flavors of Kenya Karii AB coffee, sourced from smallholder farmers in Nyeri and Kirinyaga. The farmers use traditional SL-28 and SL-34 varieties and have started incorporating shade trees to combat climate change. The coffee is processed at the Karii factory, operated by the Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society and located just 70 miles from Nairobi. Taste the passion and dedication of over 4,000 members who cultivate coffee, along with other crops like beans, yams, cassava, and corn.

HOW?

We love this coffee made in an Inverted Aeropress!

  1. Assemble the Aeropress upside down with the filter at the top. Take the basket off.
  2. Pour onto the plunger 16g of coffee (about 1 level aeropress scoop).
  3. Top it up to the top with hot water (again, 87-95 degrees filtered water is ideal), all the way to where you screw on the filter basket.
  4. Give it a light stir and screw on the basket with the wet filter paper inside it.
  5. After 2 mins, place a cup on top of the basket and flip the Aeropress quickly!
  6. Plunge into the cup and let it cool.

WHY?

On the border between the coffee regions of Nyeri and Kirinyaga, Karii factory serves 600 smallholder farmers, who have about 180 coffee trees each, on average. Most farmers grow SL-28 or SL-34 varieties, typical to Kenya, and they are also starting to use shade trees to combat the climate change happening throughout the area. Typical farm crops include beans, yams, cassava, and corn; macadamia and avocado are becoming more common as shade plants. The factory is operated by the Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society, which is the umbrella over several regional coffee factories including Kagumo, Mutitu, and Kiangundu among others; there are around 4,000 members who are part of whole society. The Karii factory was built in 1984, located about 70 miles from Nairobi and a mile and a half from Kerugoya town. The Rundu river provides water for the processing: Ripe cherry is brought by the farmer members, depulped on an Aagard disc pulper, and dried to just below 12% moisture. It is dry milled at a facility near Karatina town, at Central Kenya Coffee Mills.
